a couple of days ago i was at home in our kitchen when i smelled flowers. the scent was so strong that i almost lost my breath. i swear i could even taste them! my husband said he couldn't smell anything and looked at me like i was crazy. it lasted for just a minute or two and left just as quickly as it came. there are no flowers anywhere around or in my kitchen. i know there is an old wives tale about that srt of thing but i'm not sure what it is. i even read somewhere that phantom smells are signs of medical problems. i really don't think that could be the answer either. if anyone has an opinion i would love to hear it.

Re: unexplained smells
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 1:28 PMi have a crazy unexplained smell story too:
years ago my (now ex-)husband and i lived in our dreamhouse in south pasadena... we rented and this place was perfect... we loved and cared for this house like it was our own... there was a long, dark hallway that led to the back bedroom and all my friends and family were VERY creeped out by this hallway and would refuse to stay and hang out after dark... my ex and i never felt anything scary or bad in this house and our cat seemed perfectly comfortable there too, despite the bad vibes our friends and family insisted they felt...
we found out that the owner was selling the house and the buyer wanted to knock it down so we were forced to move... it broke our hearts to leave this place... the last night we were there i was doing the final walk-through to make sure we'd gotten all of our stuff and i was standing in the dining room when all of a sudden the worst, most gag-inducing smell just floated up from the floorboards to my nose... it smelled like DEATH... just gross and awful... i checked all over for anything that could be causing the smell and i couldn't find a thing... i called my ex in and just said, "stand there for a minute"... i didn't tell him i smelled anything... i just watched him and after about 2 seconds he got this look on his face and was like, "what THE HELL is that horrible stench?!"... he smelled it too...
i decided that the house (or whatever was in it) must have liked us and was upset we were leaving... it make me even sadder to think this house would miss us...
to this day i can't even drive down that street - if i even pass the street where we lived i start to cry...

Re: unexplained smells
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 6:59 AMClairalience is a type of clairsentience. Clairalience is the alleged smelling of odors and scents beyond the usual range of human perception. Reports of clairalience take three main forms:
1. Smelling a familiar odor or scent associated with a loved one who has passed. Often this will occur sometime shortly before, during or not too long after the loved one’s passing. In parapsychology it is hypothesized that this type of clairalience occurs to warn, prepare or possibly reassure friends and family that departed loved ones still survive but in another realm.
2. Smelling a hellish, rancorous odor (such as burning sulphur) or heavenly scent (such as roses). In parapsychology it is hypothesized that this type of clairalience occurs to warn of the dangers of hell and, conversely, to reassure of the joys of heaven.
3. Smelling another living person or empirical object at a distance beyond the range of the normal senses. In parapsychology it is hypothesized that this occurs to teach human beings that all of creation is connected in some fundamental way, with the implication that we should strive to behave responsibly toward others, our planet and beyond.

yes, phantom smells may also be a symptom of a medical problem & that can be checked with your doctor ~ just to be on the safe side
