Well, I would examine the enviroment you are in- are there open windows? Is there some factory with fragrances down the road? Did, perhaps some exensive perfume get spilled recently? Is there an innocent source such as incesnse sticks nearby?

Yes ghosts can create a smell. Just like they can manifest in visual form, the same essence can create smell. However im not sure if this is bound to the ghost or to the enviroment. Mayby the enviroment can remember smells? My mom has picked up the sence of parfume at some times. Often connected to the death of rellatives, and it normally occurs at night. I have senced it too, but i cant pick the difference as women can with parfumes. It,s all the same for me :P At some times, i have heard my grandfather saying my name loud. Strange thing is that the same thing happened to my mom.

The explanation for the smells in cars could be.. the ocean, it smells like fart. Farming areas. The smell can be localy, since it,s made of gas. This gas could sink into an lower area and affect it localy. If the windows are cloosed air will still acces the compartment in many ways.

Shortly after my mother passed away, I had a few experiences of smelling an odor that reminded me of her hospital room (intensive care).

It was a really strange smell, one that I had not previously smelled before. I call it the death smell. That's truly what I believe it was.

Anyway, out of freakin nowhere I would get a wiff of this smell. One time I was in Beverly Fabric's. Another time I was grocery shopping. Another time I was driving in my car, etc.

It was very upsetting to me when I would get a wiff of the smell and I spoke out loud to my mother and told her that if she was near, I did not want to associate that smell with her.

Many months after the last incident, a psychic asked me if I was experiencing strange odors. He mentioned it, not me. He told me it was indeed my mom and that from that point on...I would smell Lilac or Rosemary when she was near. Because those scents were more pleasing.

And, yes, every now and then, out of the blue, I will get a wiff of either and then just as quickly as it came, it is gone.

The house that my family currently lives in was built and owned by my husband's grand parents. There have been several times when we smelled a certain strong perfume (something I would NEVER wear but his grandmother did) or the smell of cigarette smoke (we don't smoke.) Its kind of reassuring to know that their still around watching over things.

On another note, when my parents died, I got a whiff of a scent that I could attribute to each of them. I was 12 when my father passed. I remember sitting in the living room which was filled to the brim with people. I was sitting in my fathers chair when... you know how there is a slight breeze when a person walks past you then there is an oder of their perfume/soap/whatever that follows? Well, no one walked past me but I got the breeze and the scent of my dad. At that age, I got right up and ran to tell my mom and my one sister. My mom didn't dismiss it but my sister (who is 14 years older than me) did.

Forward to age 27 when 5 months after the birth of my daughter, my mother died at home from a fast growing lung cancer. My husband, daughter and I went out on the back deck to wait on the hospice nurse while my aunt and two sisters were inside. While we were outside, there was a strong scent of, sugar/fried foods/fuel that runs amusement rides/etc in the air. I couldn't believe my nose and looked at my husband, asking him if he smelled the same thing (which he did.) He of course asked me if there were any fair's or carnivals near by. There weren't and hadn't been for years. Now, when I was little, the town's carnival was not even a block away but it had been done away with even before I reached my teenage years. I guess you'd have to of known my mother. She loved carnival's/fair's just for the food... and let me tell you, for a thin woman, she could eat quite a bit. ;) It was then that I knew she was letting us know that she was ok and happy (maybe even reunited with my dad).
This time, my sister who doubted the whole thing with 'smelling' my father didn't dismiss it. Though, why me? I'm still not sure but it happened and I think I'm pretty darn lucky.

So, yes, I do think paranormal things can have an odor.

Kate, it's been long established (as much as the paranormal can be) that ghosts and spirits can give us signs they're there by scent, usually floral although dark entities are supposed to smell like sulfur. I hope that helps.

Ghosts can manifest with an odor. They can also trigger sense memory within your mind - in essence - creating the smell for you.

I have several scents of friends and family that have passed on. When my friend Sean passed away 6 years ago right after his death I could smell when he was with me. I can smell when my Dad is around as well. However, these scents were nothing similar to them in life.

Interesting thread. Part of what you are describing is clairolfaction, which is the ability to receive psychic impression through a scent. But there are also definitely lots of cases where a building may be haunted by the favorite scent of a person. One fairly well described case is the ghost of Dolly Madison in the Octagon House in DC. Many people have noticed a heavy lilac perfume wafting through certain areas, and this was her signature scent. Then, there are poltergeists that seem to douse people with various odors, sometimes stinky ones.

    Kate,

My Mother, a 13th Degree Rosicrucian, would telepathically send me psi-messages. On one occasion, while I was 1300 miles distance from Mom, she in Sun Valley California, I, in Columbus Ohio...I was driving a truck through thousands of acres of corn fields and I both saw and smelled crisp, cold roses. It was beautiful. When I returned to my apartment, I called her and before I could say anything she blurted out, "Did you get it? Did you get the roses?" Mom was doing an AMORC Rosicrucian course lesson in projection.

According to Rosicrucian / Masonic doctrine, ALL is the OneSelf...where is God Not? So the real question becomes, what is not paranormal?
